The Anglo-Irish Treaty brought little peace to Ireland after its implementation: the Irish Free State plunged into civil war. In the newly formed Northern Ireland, although it remained part of the UK there were serious problems there also caused by the Treaty.
The Creation of Northern Ireland
By the terms of the Treaty, Northern Ireland was created and was less than one–fifth the size of the Irish Free State. Northern Ireland, although remaining part of the UK was given its own parliament, the Stormont which had quite far-reaching powers. Only in the areas of income tax, foreign policy and defence was it still ruled by Westminster.
