North Korea attacked the South Korean island of Yeonpyeong Nov. 23, 2010. The attack was prompted after South Korea refused to stop military exercises in the area. The shelling destroyed buildings and had civilians rushing to seek shelter. South Korea returned fire.
US Strongly Codemns North Korea
The United States responded to North Koreas attack on South Korea in a strongly worded statement condemning the North for the attack. According to Robert Gibbs, White House Press Secretary, "Earlier today, North Korea conducted an artillery attack against the South Korean island of Yeonpyeong. We are in close and continuing contact with our Korean allies."
"The United States strongly condemns this attack and calls on North Korea to halt its belligerent action and to fully abide by the terms of the Armistice Agreement," Gibbs said.
