What does the future look like for the city known for its automotive industry? Detroit, Michigan is suffering from several serve blows dealt by the recession. Even though the unemployment rate has slightly dropped this year, Detroiters still face hard times. A large amount of the population has left the city. A good percentage of people are still seeking unemployment benefits. The neighborhoods are still draped with foreclosure and abandonment. Even with all the negative aspects of Detroit people are very optimistic. Governor Rick Snyder and Mayor Dave Bing are committed to making some drastic changes to bring the “Motor City” back. Detroiters have seen some recent success in the automotive industry. There are a lot plans to revamp the downtown area of Detroit as well. So what does the future of Detroit look like?
Glenn Beck of the Fox News Channel recently compared Detroit to Hiroshima after the dropping of the atomic bomb in WW II. Many Detroiters are very upset about thoughts expressed by Beck. Detroiters are displeased by “outsiders” who continue to criticize the Motor City. In a recent Ford Motor Company commercial the narrator talks about the stories written by people who have never been to Detroit. The commercial is very powerful in its representation of Detroit and is very positive—something Detroiters aren’t use to hearing. Detroit has been labeled as one of the most stressful and dangerous places to live. The former Mayor, Kwame Kilpatrick, also contributes to the city's bad name with his scandals while in office. The problems don’t start or stop with him. Detroit has a history of problems that date back as far as the early 1900s. Racism and segregation has been a part of Detroit’s history. Charlie LeDuff, Fox2Newsreporter, did a story on his ancestors and their journey in Detroit. What he found was that his great-grandfather, who was “fair skinned”, passed for white in the 1900s. His great-grandfather knew the struggles he and his family would endure if he said he had one drop of Black blood in him. So for a better life he passed for white. His story is significant because it explains the root of the problems in Detroit. Today people who live in the city are ready to move forward and put the past behind them.
