The announcement of another secret Iranian nuclear facility was announced Friday, September 25, 2009. The announcement set the international community into a panic. The UN was to condemn the facility itself, as well as the secret expansion of Iran’s nuclear program beyond what was previously known.
In a statement from UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon’s office on Friday, September 25, 2009, Ban, “expressed his grave concern about ... the construction of a new uranium enrichment facility in the country.” The UN and the international community as a whole is reacting with surprise, shock, and dismay at the discovery of this new secret facility.
The announcement took center stage at the G-20 summit in Pittsburgh, as the main topics to be discussed were supposed to be regulating global financial markets and reducing fossil fuel subsidies.
The international community should not be surprised at this latest discovery as Iran has engaged in a pattern of deception for a number of years concerning their nuclear ambitions. According to the Council on Foreign Relations, Iran had, “failed to meet obligations under its Safeguards Agreement signed in 1974; not reporting processed and imported uranium. Some undeclared shipments dated to 1991; once again resumed its enrichment program.”
The Real Reason For Alarm
What may be in question is Iran’s true intentions of its nuclear program. Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has made no secret of his hatred for Israel. Ahmadinejad has been quoted repeatedly on his views of Israel as a nation and a people. According to the Anti-Defamation League the Iranian leader was quoted as saying, “With God's help, the countdown button for the destruction of the Zionist regime has been pushed by the hands of the children of Lebanon and Palestine . . . By God's will, we will witness the destruction of this regime in the near future.”
Contrarily, Ahmadinejad has also been quoted espousing Iran as a peace loving country. According to thinkexist.com, “Our religion prohibits us from having nuclear arms and our religious leader has prohibited it from the point of view of religious law. It's a closed road,” If this is true then the UN, and the international community as a whole, should have no reason for alarm. The problem is that Iran has a proven track record of saying one thing and doing another. This latest discovery of a secret nuclear facility is testament to that as Iran’s nuclear program was supposed to be transparent.
