The Virginia Museum of Fine Arts is celebrating the opening of its new Dominion Resources Gallery on February 12th with two important displays of African Art. VMFA's permanent collection of African art includes masks, textiles, and ceremonial artifacts from more than 100 African cultures. In addition, VMFA is one of only four art museums in the United States to have the honor of hosting Dynasty and Divinity: Ife Art in Ancient Nigeria.
Art in the Kingdom of Ife
VMFA credits the artists of the Kingdom of Ife with having "created sculptures that were among the most beautiful and sophisticated works fo art being produced anywhere in the world at the time... the arts of Ife are noteworthy for their visual power, iconic complexity and variability of form."
The holy city of Ife began to evolve as a major artistic hub between 700 and 900 A.D., and is considered by some to have been one of the world's greatest art centers. Artifacts dating from the 12th to the 15th centuries are said to be noteworthy for their "visual power, iconic complexity and variability of form." Moreover, the ability of ancient Ife artists to create breathtaking sculptures from pure copper and similar substances that are still considered extremely difficult to sculpt, is a testament to the technological sophistication of Ife artists.
