Once a baby arrives, life is nothing if not one big happy, confusing, sleepy, blurry moment. The distinction between day and night fades, the idea of a good night of sleep vanishes for the foreseeable future, and any mom and dad's nerves can be pretty shaken, pretty quickly. Where a new baby sleeps can have a great impact on how the night goes, whether or not a parent will get any sleep, or whether or not one of the caretakers will spend half the time walking the halls of the home, to and fro, from mom and dad's room to the baby's nursery.
During pregnancy, a woman and her partner have a lot to consider. Anything from the baby's name, to what color to paint the nursery. One major decision is to determine where the baby will sleep. There are so many options to explore – cribs, bassinettes, co-sleepers, bed-sharing, play yards, nursery or mom and dad's room, etc.
It can be very overwhelming, but it is important to remember, what works for one family may not work for another. Additionally, it is good to keep in mind that no decision is permanent. A parent can change her mind based on the what the baby needs once he arrives! Time and the baby's age also plays a big role in determining what the baby will require. Asking a pediatrician to explain the benefits and downside to each sleeping situation is always a great idea as well.
