Placebo – Battle For the Sun
After hit-or-miss albums Taste In Men and Sleeping With Ghosts, Placebo looked to be returning to form with the dark, snarling Meds, their fifth studio album. The promise of Battle For the Sun, their latest, however, turns out to be their biggest disappointment – despite some stonking anthems, the less effective tracks make the album their least compelling to date. This may in part have something to do with the altered dynamic – core member Steven Hewitt, drummer on all but the first album, had been replaced by Steve Forrestt– but this track-by-track breakdown examines each track in turn with a view to finding what’s missing.
Kitty Litter
The album gets off to a promising start, with a searing guitar line Steve Albini would be proud of. Molko’s sly, transatlantic vocals do much for furious demand of the chorus, and new drummer Forrestt holds his own in keeping up the sonic assault. It’s a liquid sneer of a track and best listened to loud (or in a bad mood).
Ashtray Heart
This is a return to the Placebo of 1998, harnessing the sweet-and-sour upsurge in tone of ‘You Don’t Care About Us’, a lament wrapped around an anthem making coy (and ironic) use of what sounds like a toy piano and intermittent backing-vocal chant. ‘Ashtray heart’ is a great image, however, Molko does revert to easily-rhymed lyrics in terms of much of the rest of the song. Forrestt’s drumming really comes into its own here, though, keeping the tempo up and making of it a passable stadium song worth dancing to.
