When Jeff Vinik purchased the Tampa Bay Lightning in the spring of 2010, the team's leadership and management were not only in question, but they were the laughing stock of the league. He promptly fired General Manager, Brian Lawton and head coach Rick Tocchet and sought both stability and a drastic change in attitude. He found both in Steve Yzerman and appointed him the team's new General Manager.
Yzerman's resume speaks for itself. As a 10-time All-Star, three-time Stanley Cup Champion (four if you include his seasons as an executive), two-time Olympic gold medalist, a gold medalist at the World Hockey Championship, and ranking top ten in league history for goals, assists, and points, it's safe to say winning follows Yzerman.
Though this is his first season as a General Manager, Yzerman was not shy and quickly turned the Lightning into his team. Here are the four reasons that the Tampa Bay Lightning will both make the playoffs in the coming season and return to respectability for many years to come.
